The cytochrome P450 proteins are monooxygenases which catalyze many reactions involved in drug metabolism and synthesis of cholesterol, steroids and other lipids. This gene is a segregating pseudogene, where some individuals may have an allele that encodes a functional enzyme, while other individuals have an allele encoding a protein that is predicted to be non-functional.
