This antigen is expressed on most normal epithelial cells and gastrointestinal carcinomas and functions as a homotypic calcium-independent cell adhesion molecule. The p.T247S variant (also known as c.739A>T), located in coding exon 7 of the EPCAM gene, results from an A to T substitution at nucleotide position 739. The threonine at codon 247 is replaced by serine, an amino acid with similar properties. This amino acid position is conserved. In addition, this alteration is predicted to be tolerated by in silico analysis. Since supporting evidence is limited at this time, the clinical significance of this alteration remains unclear. -
