Genes affected
OPA1 (HGNC:8140): (OPA1 mitochondrial dynamin like GTPase) The protein encoded by this gene is a nuclear-encoded mitochondrial protein with similarity to dynamin-related GTPases. The encoded protein localizes to the inner mitochondrial membrane and helps regulate mitochondrial stability and energy output. This protein also sequesters cytochrome c. Mutations in this gene have been associated with optic atrophy type 1, which is a dominantly inherited optic neuropathy resulting in progressive loss of visual acuity, leading in many cases to legal blindness. Submissions by phenotype
Autosomal dominant optic atrophy classic form Uncertain:1
Uncertain significance, criteria provided, single submitter | clinical testing | Illumina Laboratory Services, Illumina | Apr 27, 2017 | This variant was observed as part of a predisposition screen in an ostensibly healthy population. A literature search was performed for the gene, cDNA change, and amino acid change (where applicable). No publications were found based on this search. Allele frequency data from public databases did not allow this variant to be ruled in or out of causing disease. Therefore, this variant is classified as a variant of unknown significance. - |
not specified Benign:1
Likely benign, criteria provided, single submitter | clinical testing | GeneDx | Dec 07, 2015 | This variant is considered likely benign or benign based on one or more of the following criteria: it is a conservative change, it occurs at a poorly conserved position in the protein, it is predicted to be benign by multiple in silico algorithms, and/or has population frequency not consistent with disease. - |
