The encoded protein is required for normal spindle activity during mitosis and is necessary for normal brain development. Several transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for this gene. [provided by RefSeq, Sep 2011]
DIMT1 (HGNC:30217): (DIM1 rRNA methyltransferase and ribosome maturation factor) The protein encoded by this gene is a methyltransferase that is responsible for dimethylation of adjacent adenosines near the 18S rRNA decoding site. The encoded protein is essential for ribosome biogenesis, although its catalytic activity is not involved in the process. Therefore, it has been classified as a Variant of Uncertain Significance. This sequence change replaces proline with serine at codon 80 of the KIF2A protein (p.Pro80Ser). The proline residue is moderately conserved and there is a moderate physicochemical difference between proline and serine. This variant is not present in population databases (ExAC no frequency). This variant has not been reported in the literature in individuals affected with KIF2A-related conditions. Algorithms developed to predict the effect of missense changes on protein structure and function (SIFT, PolyPhen-2, Align-GVGD) all suggest that this variant is likely to be tolerated. -
