The encoded protein is required for normal spindle activity during mitosis and is necessary for normal brain development. DIMT1 (HGNC:30217): (DIM1 rRNA methyltransferase and ribosome maturation factor) The protein encoded by this gene is a methyltransferase that is responsible for dimethylation of adjacent adenosines near the 18S rRNA decoding site. The encoded protein is essential for ribosome biogenesis, although its catalytic activity is not involved in the process. This sequence change replaces lysine, which is basic and polar, with glutamine, which is neutral and polar, at codon 87 of the KIF2A protein (p.Lys87Gln). In summary, the available evidence is currently insufficient to determine the role of this variant in disease. Therefore, it has been classified as a Variant of Uncertain Significance. An algorithm developed to predict the effect of missense changes on protein structure and function (PolyPhen-2) suggests that this variant is likely to be disruptive. ClinVar contains an entry for this variant (Variation ID: 1331608). This variant has not been reported in the literature in individuals affected with KIF2A-related conditions.
