The protein is phosphorylated by cyclin-dependent kinase 1 during mitosis and subsequently interacts with polo-like kinase 1. The protein is thought to function in regulating mitosis and cytokinesis. Algorithms developed to predict the effect of missense changes on protein structure and function are either unavailable or do not agree on the potential impact of this missense change (SIFT: "Tolerated"; PolyPhen-2: "Possibly Damaging"; Align-GVGD: "Class C0"). This variant is present in population databases (rs750752125, ExAC 0.002%). This sequence change replaces phenylalanine with leucine at codon 178 of the MPLKIP protein (p.Phe178Leu). The phenylalanine residue is highly conserved and there is a small physicochemical difference between phenylalanine and leucine. -
