The frequency data for this variant in gnomAD is considered unreliable, as metrics indicate poor data quality at this position. c.233C>A has been observed in multiple individual(s) undergoing hemoglobin genetic screening who did not present with hematological features of HBA2-related disease and at least 1 individual (zygosity unknown) with alpha thalassemia (example, Hashemi-Soteh_2020, Badens_1999, Caruso_2002). These report(s) do not provide unequivocal conclusions about association of the variant with Alpha Thalassemia. To our knowledge, no experimental evidence demonstrating an impact on protein function has been reported.
