Genes affected
COL11A1 (HGNC:2186): (collagen type XI alpha 1 chain) This gene encodes one of the two alpha chains of type XI collagen, a minor fibrillar collagen. Type XI collagen is a heterotrimer but the third alpha chain is a post-translationally modified alpha 1 type II chain. Mutations in this gene are associated with type II Stickler syndrome and with Marshall syndrome. A single-nucleotide polymorphism in this gene is also associated with susceptibility to lumbar disc herniation. Multiple transcript variants have been identified for this gene. The c.3698A>G (p.N1233S) alteration is located in exon 48 (coding exon 48) of the COL11A1 gene. This alteration results from a A to G substitution at nucleotide position 3698, causing the asparagine (N) at amino acid position 1233 to be replaced by a serine (S). Based on insufficient or conflicting evidence, the clinical significance of this alteration remains unclear. -
