The protein forms a secreted complex with cardiotrophin-like cytokine factor 1 and acts on cells expressing ciliary neurotrophic factor receptors. The complex can promote survival of neuronal cells. This alteration results from a C to G substitution at nucleotide position 1247, causing the threonine (T) at amino acid position 416 to be replaced by an arginine (R).
