The protein encoded is a large chondroitin sulfate proteoglycan and is a major component of the extracellular matrix. This protein is involved in cell adhesion, proliferation, proliferation, migration and angiogenesis and plays a central role in tissue morphogenesis and maintenance. This sequence change replaces alanine, which is neutral and non-polar, with valine, which is neutral and non-polar, at codon 1859 of the VCAN protein (p.Ala1859Val). This variant is present in population databases (no rsID available, gnomAD 0.0009%). This variant has not been reported in the literature in individuals affected with VCAN-related conditions.
