Genes affected
DNAH5 (HGNC:2950): (dynein axonemal heavy chain 5) This gene encodes a dynein protein, which is part of a microtubule-associated motor protein complex consisting of heavy, light, and intermediate chains. This protein is an axonemal heavy chain dynein. It functions as a force-generating protein with ATPase activity, whereby the release of ADP is thought to produce the force-producing power stroke. Mutations in this gene cause primary ciliary dyskinesia type 3, as well as Kartagener syndrome, which are both diseases due to ciliary defects. [provided by RefSeq, Oct 2009]

The p.R982C variant (also known as c.2944C>T), located in coding exon 19 of the DNAH5 gene, results from a C to T substitution at nucleotide position 2944. The arginine at codon 982 is replaced by cysteine, an amino acid with highly dissimilar properties. This amino acid position is highly conserved in available vertebrate species. In addition, the in silico prediction for this alteration is inconclusive. Since supporting evidence is limited at this time, the clinical significance of this alteration remains unclear. -
