The encoded protein appears to promote neurite formation. A mutation in this gene has been reported to be associated with hereditary spastic paraplegia, however the pathogenicity of the mutation, which may simply represent a polymorphism, is unclear. This variant has not been reported in the literature in individuals with ZFYVE27-related disease. This variant is not present in population databases (ExAC no frequency). This sequence change replaces serine with cysteine at codon 337 of the ZFYVE27 protein (p.Ser337Cys).
