The product of this gene is required for stem-cell maintenance in the central nervous system, and also regulates gene expression in the stomach. Mutations in this gene have been associated with optic nerve hypoplasia and with syndromic microphthalmia, a severe form of structural eye malformation. This variant is not present in population databases (ExAC no frequency). This sequence change results in a premature translational stop signal in the SOX2 gene (p.Arg53Profs*43). While this is not anticipated to result in nonsense mediated decay, it is expected to disrupt the last 265 amino acids (~83%) of the SOX2 protein. - |
