The encoded protein localizes to the mitochondria and is involved in the exchange of aspartate for glutamate across the inner mitochondrial membrane. Polymorphisms in this gene may be associated with autism, and mutations in this gene may also be a cause of global cerebral hypomyelination. This sequence change replaces phenylalanine with tyrosine at codon 660 of the SLC25A12 protein (p.Phe660Tyr). The phenylalanine residue is highly conserved and there is a small physicochemical difference between phenylalanine and tyrosine. In summary, the available evidence is currently insufficient to determine the role of this variant in disease. Therefore, it has been classified as a Variant of Uncertain Significance. -
