The encoded protein is a small GTPase that contains both N-terminal and C-terminal guanine nucleotide-binding motifs. This protein is localized in the cilia and plays a role in cilia formation and in maintenance of cilia. Mutations in this gene are the cause of Joubert syndrome 8. This variant has not been reported in the literature in individuals with ARL13B-related conditions. This variant is not present in population databases (ExAC no frequency). This sequence change replaces aspartic acid with glycine at codon 365 of the ARL13B protein (p.Asp365Gly). The aspartic acid residue is moderately conserved and there is a moderate physicochemical difference between aspartic acid and glycine. -
