Genes affected
SOD2 (HGNC:11180): (superoxide dismutase 2) This gene is a member of the iron/manganese superoxide dismutase family. It encodes a mitochondrial protein that forms a homotetramer and binds one manganese ion per subunit. This protein binds to the superoxide byproducts of oxidative phosphorylation and converts them to hydrogen peroxide and diatomic oxygen. Mutations in this gene have been associated with idiopathic cardiomyopathy (IDC), premature aging, sporadic motor neuron disease, and cancer. Alternative splicing of this gene results in multiple transcript variants. A related pseudogene has been identified on chromosome 1. [provided by RefSeq, Apr 2016]

Uncertain significance, criteria provided, single submitter | clinical testing | Ambry Genetics | Nov 12, 2021 | The c.182A>C (p.N61T) alteration is located in exon 2 (coding exon 2) of the SOD2 gene. This alteration results from a A to C substitution at nucleotide position 182, causing the asparagine (N) at amino acid position 61 to be replaced by a threonine (T). Based on insufficient or conflicting evidence, the clinical significance of this alteration remains unclear. - |
