Specifically, this protein functions as a member of a multi-protein complex that binds to the TTAGGG repeats of telomeres, regulating telomere length and protecting chromosome ends from illegitimate recombination, catastrophic chromosome instability, and abnormal chromosome segregation. Increased transcriptional expression of this gene is associated with stomach carcinogenesis and its progression. Alternatively spliced transcript variants have been described. The glycine at codon 95 is replaced by cysteine, an amino acid with highly dissimilar properties. This variant was identified in one or more individuals with gliomas and segregated with disease in at least one family (Bainbridge MN et al. J Natl Cancer Inst, 2015 Jan;107:384). This amino acid position is well conserved in available vertebrate species. In addition, the in silico prediction for this alteration is inconclusive.
