Their diverse functions include regulating neurotransmitter release, heart rate, insulin secretion, neuronal excitability, epithelial electrolyte transport, smooth muscle contraction, and cell volume. This gene encodes a member of the potassium channel, voltage-gated, isk-related subfamily. This member is a small integral membrane subunit that assembles with the KCNH2 gene product, a pore-forming protein, to alter its function. This gene is expressed in heart and muscle and the gene mutations are associated with cardiac arrhythmia. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008]

However, these predictions have yet to be confirmed by functional studies. This variant was found in 31/120540 control chromosomes, predominantly observed in the East Asian subpopulation at a frequency of 0.003587 (31/8642). This frequency is about 51 times the estimated maximal expected allele frequency of a pathogenic KCNE2 variant (0.00007), suggesting this is likely a benign polymorphism found primarily in the populations of East Asian origin. In addition, multiple clinical diagnostic laboratories/reputable databases classified this variant as benign/likely benign. The variant of interest has not, to our knowledge, been reported in affected individuals via publications; nor evaluated for functional impact by in vivo/vitro studies.
