The HBB c.270_271del (p.Ser90Argfs*5) variant alters the translational reading frame of the HBB mRNA and causes the premature termination of HBB protein synthesis. In the published literature, this variant has been reported in individuals with beta thalassemia (PMID: 9101288 (1997), 12144056 (2002)). This variant has not been reported in large, multi-ethnic general populations (Genome Aggregation Database, http://gnomad.broadinstitute.org). Based on the available information, this variant is classified as pathogenic. -
