The sea urchin ortholog of this gene encodes a component of sperm outer dynein arms, and the protein is implicated in ciliary function. The p.D550Y variant (also known as c.1648G>T), located in coding exon 15 of the NME8 gene, results from a G to T substitution at nucleotide position 1648. The aspartic acid at codon 550 is replaced by tyrosine, an amino acid with highly dissimilar properties. This amino acid position is conserved. In addition, this alteration is predicted to be tolerated by in silico analysis. Since supporting evidence is limited at this time, the clinical significance of this alteration remains unclear. -
